Adeline:   I think we called it the creator

Ed:  Mm, hmm. It was a……

Woman in background: They had a word for it.  The changer.

Ed: ……some some wise person, or a great person come along.  These coasts here were beaches.  Where all these people were living at. That’s way back in the early days.  This man come along, haha.  He’s talking English again.

Tim:  I thought I was understanding it too well.

Group laughter

Ed:  He’s a …….

 Spiritual  Changer.  A

human being.  A white person.

or whatever it was.

And he appeared.

And so he came and walked over to where the people were.

And he changed the person

To a deer.

A deer. And it was a woman that was seen

working on a …..

I don’t know what they call that ….

She was making some kind of mattress anyway, out of “cattail”. That’s that foxtail in those ponds.

And so he approached her and

he took what the woman was working on

He said to her, “Take it and put it on your butt and

Laughter

on your butt and jump.”

So she took that thing and put it there in her back here…. And she jumped and she turned into a deer.  That’s that man

The Changer

He changes people.

That’s how the deer came to be.

And he again went to another

another human being.

And he was working.

The man was working

on his paddle.

And so he approached him and he took the paddle the person was working on

and He gave it to him.

“It goes on your back

and go to the sea and dive.

He meant dive.

Dive.”

And so the person went and dove

and he became a Blackfish.

And he turned into a blackfish. Them great big whales.

And uh….. what else was he changing.

He changed a lot of things, but I can’t remember.

And uh….anyway he went aaaaall around where the Indians lived

Changing just a certain person.

Not all of them.

And that’s where the blackfish and deer, bear, they changed then into animals and fish.

Bea: And he changed, changed uh, something that was drinking in the water .

And changed it into a rock. And the rock was there.

I can’t remember what rock it was though

Tim: Anyways

Ed:  Anyway when that, when that person that was changing people into animals and everything reached that canal up here.

Hood’s canal.

I forgot what, you don’t know that spot where he left his footprints do you?

I think mom knows.

Hazel:  I don’t know

Ed:  she say something?

Adeline:  She said she don’t know

Hazel: I heard about it but I don’t remember

Adeline:  She heard but she doesn’t remember

Ed:  mm, hmmm

Adeline:  What is Hood’s Canals name?

Ed:  I used to know, but I forgot.

Adeline:  I forgot too.  We never say it  (uniteligible)

Ed:  Anyway, when he reached up there that canal there.  His footprints are still there. Today.  Supposed to be.
